About Us

Warriors Basketball Club is all about helping young players grow — as athletes and as people. Based in Walnut Creek and the Lamorinda area, we offer teams for boys and girls in grades 2–8, with a strong focus on skill development and teamwork.

Our coaching staff brings high-level experience and a passion for teaching the game the right way.

What really sets us apart is the community we’ve built since 1997. Families stick with us year after year not just for the basketball — but because they feel part of our Warriors family!

FOUNDER

Phil Doherty

Phil  dedicated his life to youth sports, serving as a coach and athletic director at St. Stephen’s School in San Francisco before opening a sporting goods business in 1972. His career in the sports apparel industry spanned over 40 years.

In 1992, Phil began sponsoring and coaching AAU youth basketball programs, and in 1997 he teamed up with Chris Whirlow to co-found MVP Flight and Flight Elite Basketball. These programs were among the first to offer year-round youth basketball in Northern California — a legacy Phil took great pride in.

Phil also co-founded the Warriors Basketball Club with Ken Nelson and served alongside him as co-athletic director for St. Perpetua CYO. For many years, Phil co-directed and coached with his son, Mark Dougherty, helping shape the Warriors community into what it is today.

Phil passed away in 2024, but his vision and impact continue to guide the program. His son, Mark, now serves as the Director of Warriors Basketball Club and is committed to carrying on his father’s legacy!

Meet our Coaching Team — decades of experience from youth to varsity.

DIRECTOR

A Cal Poly San Luis Obispo graduate in Sports Management, Mark began his coaching journey at Campolindo High School before becoming one of NorCal Elite’s most successful coaches, leading teams to multiple national championships. Also a full-time teacher, Mark is known for his deep commitment to mentorship and player development.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR / HEAD COACH

Kenji McCrae

With over a decade of experience in the Warriors program and 10 previous years with Flight Elite/NorCal Elite, Kenji has been instrumental in developing top youth teams across the region. His love for the game, high-energy coaching style, and commitment to building strong team culture are evident in every session. A former player himself, Kenji emphasizes the importance of being a great teammate both on and off the court.

She specializes in skills development and mentorship, and her work extends beyond the court as a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and mental health. Her coaching style blends athletic training with personal growth, making her a valuable presence in the Warriors Basketball Club community.

Kenny Evans

Coach Kenny brings over 20 years of coaching and skill development experience, working with players at all levels—from youth to professional. A late bloomer himself, Kenny started playing basketball in high school and went on to earn All-League and All-Area honors before competing at Allan Hancock College and San Francisco State. He then played professionally overseas in Asia and Europe for six years. Since 2004, Kenny has coached and trained alongside legendary coach Bryan Gardere, contributing to state title runs and deep conference success. Tyler Bergren

Coach Tyler is a Campolindo High School and MVP Flight Elite alumnus known for his high motor and defensive intensity. As an undersized guard, he made a big impact—earning All-League Honorable Mention honors and helping lead his team to two NCS championships over three varsity seasons. Though sidelined his senior year due to injury, he served as team captain and player-coach. Tyler has continued coaching with Campolindo’s JV program and now brings his energy and experience to the Warriors Basketball Club.

Kimberly Maxwell
